Bulk Sesame Oil — Refined Sesame Oil Supplier

Refined sesame oil is the pale, near-neutral cooking and ingredient grade — not the dark toasted oil sold as a seasoning. Those are two different products, and confusing them is the commonest error in a sesame oil enquiry, so this page settles that first. We refine sesame oil in Ukraine from imported crude and export it in bulk to food manufacturers, blenders, bottlers and formulators, against the limits the buyer sets rather than against a published house figure.

Refined sesame oil and toasted sesame oil are different products

The difference is the seed, not just the processing. Toasted sesame oil is pressed from roasted seed, comes out dark amber to brown, smells and tastes intensely of sesame, and is used by the teaspoon as a finishing and seasoning oil. Refined sesame oil is pressed from unroasted seed and then neutralised, bleached and deodorised, which leaves it pale yellow and close to neutral, and it is used by the litre as a cooking medium and a formulation ingredient.

They are not substitutes in either direction. Put refined oil where a recipe wants toasted and the sesame character disappears; put toasted oil where a formulation wants refined and it overwhelms everything else and costs several times as much. If an enquiry says only sesame oil, we will ask which one you mean, because the two are priced, packed and specified differently.

Light sesame oil, gingelly oil and the other names on the market

Light sesame oil usually means the refined or unroasted grade, and the word light refers to the colour and the flavour rather than to anything about the fat. The Codex Alimentarius standard for named vegetable oils (CODEX STAN 210-1999) files the product as sesameseed oil, listing sesame oil, gingelly oil, benne oil, ben oil, till oil and tillie oil as alternative names, and defines it as the oil derived from sesame seeds, the seeds of Sesamum indicum L.

Because light, pure, dark and toasted are retail shelf words rather than contract terms, state what you want in technical language: refined (RBD) sesameseed oil from unroasted seed, or unrefined oil from roasted seed. That removes the ambiguity entirely.

Where the oil comes from, and who buys it

We refine this oil ourselves; we do not grow or crush sesame seed. Sesame is not a Ukrainian crop, so the crude arrives from producing origins and the refining — neutralising, bleaching and deodorising — happens at our own plant in Ukraine before the oil is packed and exported. Refining in house is the part that matters commercially here, because it is what makes the colour and the neutrality of the finished oil a contract term rather than whatever a previous seller happened to produce.

  • Food manufacturers using a stable, near-neutral oil in sauces, dressings, marinades and bakery.
  • Blenders producing cooking oil blends where sesame carries part of the formulation.
  • Noodle, snack and ready-meal plants that want sesame on the ingredient list without the aroma of the toasted grade.
  • Bottlers and repackers filling retail and catering packs, frequently under their own label.
  • Cosmetic and personal care formulators using it as a carrier and emollient base.

For cosmetic and personal care use, note the limits of what we offer: food-grade oil, refined to the specification you set. We make no pharmacopoeial, parenteral or pharmaceutical-grade claim for it. If your formulation requires a compendial grade, establish that at the enquiry stage rather than after a contract exists.

Heat behaviour and keeping quality

Refining raises the temperature at which an oil begins to smoke, because the free fatty acids and fine particulate that lower it are what refining removes — which is why the refined grade, not the toasted one, goes near a wok or a fryer at volume. We will not publish a smoke point figure as though it were our specification: published values differ between sources, and they describe fresh oil rather than oil that has already been worked. The comparison chart linked below sets published figures for the common cooking oils side by side.

Sesame oil naturally contains lignans, among them sesamin and sesamolin, along with tocopherols. That is a compositional fact about the crop rather than a claim about a consignment or about shelf life, and oxidative freshness on arrival is still governed by the peroxide value limit you write into the contract and by how the oil is stored after it lands.

Codex reference parameters for sesameseed oil

The ranges below belong to the Codex Alimentarius standard for named vegetable oils (CODEX STAN 210-1999), the internationally accepted reference for this oil. They describe the standard, not a consignment: the certificate of analysis issued with your shipment is what governs, and your own specification may be tighter.

  • Relative density (20°C/water at 20°C): 0.915 – 0.924
  • Refractive index (ND 40°C): 1.465 – 1.469
  • Saponification value: 186 – 195 mg KOH/g oil
  • Iodine value: 104 – 120
  • Unsaponifiable matter: not more than 20 g/kg
  • Baudouin test: should be positive for sesameseed oil
  • Acid value, refined oils: not more than 0.6 mg KOH/g
  • Peroxide value, refined oils: up to 10 milliequivalents of active oxygen per kg

The Baudouin test is an authenticity check rather than a quality limit, and it is worth knowing about if you verify incoming cargo: a positive result indicates the presence of sesame oil, which is how a laboratory tells a genuine sesame oil from a cheaper oil presented as one. We publish no house figures for free fatty acid, peroxide value, moisture or colour. You state the limits your specification requires, those limits go into the contract, and the certificate of analysis reports what was loaded against them. Independent inspection at loading by SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas or another surveyor you appoint can be arranged at your cost.

What to specify when you request a quotation

  • Which product: refined (RBD) oil from unroasted seed, or unrefined oil from roasted seed.
  • Quality limits: acid value or free fatty acid, peroxide value, moisture, insoluble impurities and colour, each with a maximum.
  • Any contaminant limits your market controls, including pesticide residues and heavy metals, with methods named.
  • Whether sesame has to be declared as an allergen on your destination market's pack, and in what wording.
  • Volume per shipment, and whether this is one consignment or a running contract.
  • Packing format, with pack size and pallet configuration for packed goods.
  • Destination port and trade term, FOB or CIF, plus any inspection you want appointed at loading.

Sesame is a declarable allergen in a growing number of markets, including the United States and the European Union, so confirm the declaration and handling requirements that apply where you sell before committing to artwork. That is a question for your own regulator and your own customer: we make no allergen-control certification claim.

Packing, trade terms and documentation

We load flexitank for a full container moving as one bulk lot, ISO tank where the receiver has dedicated edible oil tankage, 190 kg drums and IBCs where there is no bulk discharge at destination, and PET bottles where you are buying finished retail or catering packs. Sesame oil is usually bought in smaller parcels than a commodity seed oil, so drums and IBCs are the common answer here.

We quote FOB or CIF to a named port under Incoterms 2020. Payment is by bank transfer (T/T) in EUR or USD, and lead time is typically 7 to 14 days from order confirmation. A certificate of analysis and a certificate of origin ship with every consignment, alongside the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Our food safety systems are certified to HACCP and ISO 22000; those are the certifications we hold.

Enquiries and quotation requests are handled by email, at export@refinesunfloweroil.com, or through the contact form. Refine Sunflower Oil has exported edible oils since 2000 from Gareth Jones St 8, 04119 Kyiv, Ukraine.
