How to Source Sunflower Oil Directly from a Crushing Plant

What “direct from the plant” actually means

Buying direct means your contract is with the company that crushed or refined the oil, not with a trader who bought it from them. The practical test is simple: ask who is named as seller on the contract and who issues the certificate of analysis. If both answers are the plant, you are buying direct.

It matters because it changes who you can ask questions of. A plant can tell you when a parcel was produced, what it was produced to, and when it can load. An intermediary relays an answer, and sometimes relays it slowly.

What you gain

One counterparty for claims. If a consignment does not match the contract specification, there is a single contract, a single certificate of analysis and a single party to resolve it with.

Specification control. You can state your limits and have them confirmed before loading rather than discover them on arrival.

Traceability you can show. Buyers with their own audit obligations usually need to document the chain. A direct relationship makes that short.

Pricing you can read. You still negotiate, but you are negotiating a price rather than a price plus an undisclosed commission.

What you give up

A plant sells what it produces. If you need several oils from several origins on one booking, a trader does that and a producer does not.

You also take on more administration. Opening a direct relationship means credit checks, contract negotiation and your own documentary diligence, which is effort that a trader otherwise absorbs. For an occasional parcel it may not be worth it.

How to open the relationship

Approach with a specification, not a request for a price list. A plant can answer “20 ft flexitank of refined sunflower oil, CIF Valencia, these parameters, loading in November” quickly. It cannot do much with “please send your best price”.

Have four things ready before you make contact:

• The grade you need — refined (RBD) or crude — and the limits your specification works to.
• Volume, and whether it is a one-off or a repeating requirement.
• Packing format: flexitank, ISO tank, 190 kg drum, IBC or PET.
• Destination port, and whether you want FOB or CIF.

Expect to start on terms that protect the seller. A first order is usually bank transfer with a deposit, or a confirmed letter of credit at sight. Open account comes after a track record, not before.

Verifying you are actually talking to the plant

• Ask who holds title to the goods at the moment of loading.
• Ask which laboratory issues the certificate of analysis.
• Ask for the loading date to be confirmed against the production schedule.
• Ask whether an independent inspection at loading can be arranged, and who would appoint the inspector.

None of these is an awkward question, and a producer answers them without hesitation.
